READY FOR ANY CHALLENGE

Freight Solution for Remote Operations

The Cessna 406 Caravan II is a light, twin-turboprop aircraft that can be configured to seat up to twelve passengers. The aircraft can quickly and easily be converted to a freighter to transport a variety of cargo in a space of approximately 196 cubic feet and weighing 3,085 pounds. The cabin can be pressurized for higher altitude flights up to 30,000 feet, allowing crew and pressure-sensitive cargo to remain free of any unwanted effects due to changes in altitude.

The wide cargo door behind the left wing is actually made up of two doors: the left side, which swings open to the left, and the right side, which opens as a clamshell; the upper door swinging upward and the lower door swinging downward and clear of the doorway. If the optional cargo pod is installed on the belly of the aircraft, additional smaller cargo can be loaded there.

Due to its compact size, short takeoff and landing capabilities, and ability to operate from unpaved runways in remote, undeveloped areas, it is an ideal choice to transport line-down cargo to areas that larger aircraft are unable to access.

Cargo Capacity & Access

The usable cargo area starts from behind the cockpit and ends just past the split cargo door located behind the left wing. It can accommodate approximately 196 cubic feet of cargo weighing up to 3,085 pounds.

Rear Cargo Door: The cargo door is 47 inches in width and 46 inches in height. It is located behind the left wing and is made up of two doors: the left side, which swings open to the left, and the right side, which opens as a clamshell; the upper door swinging upward and the lower door swinging downward and clear of the doorway.

Cargo Pod: If the optional cargo pod is installed on the belly of the aircraft, smaller cargo of up to 45 cubic feet can be loaded there. The additional weight of cargo loaded into the cargo pod would be included in the aircraft’s maximum payload of 3,085 pounds.

Range & Routes

The Cessna 406 Caravan II flies a variety of domestic routes within the contiguous US. It has a non-stop range of approximately 1,300 miles empty, and 830 miles at maximum payload, making it ideal for established routes or servicing remote locations throughout the US, Canada, and Mexico.

Airport Requirements

The Cessna 406 Caravan II is considered a light aircraft and can take off and land at any established airport, towered or non-towered, or remote areas with undeveloped infrastructure or dirt runways.

Taxiway Width: The aircraft’s length of 39 feet and wingspan of 50 feet means it can operate on narrow taxiways.

Parking Apron Space: The Cessna 406 Caravan II does not require a spacious parking apron for loading, unloading, and servicing.

Ground Handling: Specialized equipment is generally not needed to load and unload cargo in this aircraft.

Fueling: Refueling may be carried out using fuel containers, fuel pumps, or fuel trucks. Fuel capacity is ultimately dependent on the weight of the payload carried by the aircraft and the range of travel required, but can be up to 480 gallons.

Power and Air Support: The Cessna 406 Caravan II does not generally require external electrical power or support. In cases where the aircraft requires external power, a 28-volt ground power unit can be connected to the aircraft’s auxiliary power port.

Runway Requirements

Takeoff Runway Length: For a fully loaded Cessna 406 Caravan II, a minimum runway length of approximately 3,000 feet is required to safely reach takeoff speed. This requirement can vary based on altitude, temperature, wind conditions, and runway conditions. High-altitude airports with elevations over 8,000 feet may require longer runways due to lower air density.

Landing Runway Length: The Cessna 406 Caravan II requires a normal minimum runway length of 2,200 feet at maximum payload. Wet, icy, or unpaved runways may increase the minimum landing distance required for safe operation.

Crew

The Cessna 406 Caravan II can be flown with a single pilot. Additional cargo support personnel may be assigned to the flight by Airfreight.com to monitor the cargo and coordinate seamless end-to-end delivery.

Time-Critical Cargo Delivery with the 406 Caravan II

AirFreight.com can make time-critical airborne deliveries within the US, Canada, or Mexico using the most cost-effective methods and fastest delivery possible.

The Challenge

You received an urgent call from your jobsite supervisor saying that the same components on three different sections of production equipment were showing imminent signs of failure for the second time in four months. The industry had experienced issues with counterfeit parts in recent times and had started to machine their own parts in-house to ensure quality and traceability. There were no replacements available in the onsite inventory, which was probably a good thing, but the needed components wouldn’t be available for another 12 hours.

You decided to dispatch your primary troubleshooting crew, immediately calculating they would at least be able to complete several hours of important and necessary prep work ahead of the currently unavailable components arriving. You really didn’t want a line-down situation on your hands and hoped they would be able to complete the prep work without having to take the production equipment offline before the components arrived. They hurriedly packed the box truck with all the essential heavy equipment and tools they could carry for the job and headed out on the 10-hour, 700-mile drive to the job site.

How We Solve It

You had very positive experiences with AirFreight.com several times on other time-sensitive deliveries, so you called the Expeditor you had worked with before directly and explained what was happening and what you needed. Each component was about the size of a small desk and could be picked up and maneuvered fairly easily by two people and could be delivered to the local airport using the company's flatbed truck. The components needed to be shipped to the jobsite as quickly as possible when they became available in 12 hours.

Although the jobsite wasn’t near an established airport of any size, the companies in the area teamed up to bulldoze a 4,000-foot dirt runway in a shared field several years ago, and the runway was actively maintained. The Expeditor knew about that runway, having shipped equipment and tools to this area before.

What Sets Us Apart

The Expeditor confirmed the component’s dimensions and weights and proposed a charter flight using a light, twin-engine aircraft as the most time-saving and cost-effective option. Since the aircraft could fly in a direct line, not having to adhere to the established roadways, the aircraft could complete the direct 520-mile flight in two hours with in-flight tracking the entire way.

With the dedicated chartered aircraft standing by at the local airport, the company flatbed truck delivered the newly machined components on schedule. They were loaded and secured in the aircraft and flown to the jobsite, and arrived there two hours later. The troubleshooting crew, having completed their prep work earlier, installed the components on the three sections of production equipment within the minimum downtime required.
